Ukrainian Diligent Capital Partners investes $12M in Tonik, the neobank of the former head of Platinum Bank

A consortium of investors led by Ukrainian company Diligent Capital Partners (DCP) has invested $12 million in Philippine neobank Tonik.

The bank was founded by Greg Krasnov, who is well known for his work in the Ukrainian financial sector.

Details of the deal

  • Tonik positions itself as the first fully digital bank in the Philippines. It began operations in 2021 and has since attracted nearly $150 million in deposits. The company estimates that the retail savings market in the country exceeds $350 billion, and the potential of the unsecured lending segment is estimated at $100 billion.

  • In addition to Ukraine’s DCP, the project’s investors include Japan’s Mizuho, America’s Point72 Ventures, and Singapore and India’s Insignia Ventures Partners, Peak XV Partners, and Altara Ventures.

  • The $12 million raised is planned to be used for further business development and scaling up the bank’s credit-oriented model.

About the co-founder of Tonic

It is reported that part of Tonik’s management team consists of Ukrainian citizens, and some employees continue to work directly from Ukraine.

The bank’s founder is Greg Krasnov. Before launching his business in Asia, he worked for a long time in management positions at Ukraine’s Platinum Bank:

  • From 2006, he held the position of CEO.

  • From December 2013, he was chairman of the board.

  • In October 2014, Krasnov left the bank, at that time holding the position of deputy chairman of the supervisory board.

A few years after his dismissal, on January 10, 2017, the NBU board classified Platinum Bank as insolvent.

About the investor

Diligent Capital Partners (DCP) is a private equity fund focused on export-oriented companies, agribusiness, and the consumer services sector.

The fund also announced the strengthening of its team: Cristina Harea, who previously served as deputy chair of the National Bank of Moldova, has joined DCP.
