OpenAI has filed a confidential application for an initial public offering (IPO) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
This was reported by CNBC.
The company said it has not yet made a final decision on timing for going public.

In a statement the company said it has not yet settled on IPO timing. It added that there are currently projects that are easier to carry out as a private company, but filing the documents preserves the option to go public more quickly if it makes sense.
The company also plans to hold a tender offer for employees that will allow them to sell some shares at the company’s latest valuation.
According to CNBC, OpenAI’s most recent valuation was $852 billion after fundraising.
OpenAI is working on IPO preparations with investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.
What is known about OpenAI’s competitors
CNBC writes that among OpenAI’s main competitors are Anthropic, Google and SpaceX, which earlier this year combined with Elon Musk’s xAI startup.
In April 2026, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX filed a confidential application for an IPO. It could become the largest IPO in history: the company plans to raise about $75 billion from share sales and is aiming for a $1.75 trillion valuation.
In early June 2026 Anthropic also announced a confidential filing for an IPO. The New York Times reports that a public listing could take place this fall. Shortly before that the company raised a new round of funding, after which its valuation reached $965 billion.
Despite the possible listings of OpenAI and Anthropic in 2026, Perplexity maintains its plans to IPO in 2028.
“Despite those two companies, we had planned something for 2028, so that remains relevant,” said Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas.
