X launches a marketplace for inactive nicknames. How will it work?

Social network X is preparing to launch a new service, Handle Marketplace, which will allow users to purchase and reserve inactive nicknames, Verge reports.

Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers will have access to the marketplace. They will be able to view the database of inactive accounts and submit a request for the desired nickname.

All nicknames are divided into two categories:

  • Priority handles — free, usually full names, phrases consisting of several words, or combinations of letters and numbers.

  • Rare handles will be sold for money. Their price will range from $2,500 to over a million dollars, depending on popularity and uniqueness.

The company emphasizes that this is not a one-time promotion, but a long-term service aimed at attracting new paying users.

After changing the nickname, the previous one will be frozen, meaning no one else will be able to use it. In the future, X may offer a paid feature to redirect from the old profile to the new one.

However, if the user decides to downgrade their subscription, the system will automatically return their original username, and the acquired nickname will be lost.
