A new competitor for Google Translate. OpenAI launches ChatGPT Translate as a separate translation service
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Translate as a separate translation service. The service supports translation of texts in over 50 languages, The Verge reports.
The ChatGPT Translate interface is similar to Google Translate: two text fields and drop-down menus for selecting the source and target languages.
According to The Verge, the ChatGPT Translate homepage states that it can translate text, images, and voice, but image support is not yet available in any version of the service.
The Verge adds that ChatGPT Translate is positioned as a direct competitor to Google Translate.
Despite their external similarities, there are differences in functionality.
-
Google Translate supports the translation of images, documents, and websites, while ChatGPT Translate currently only works with text.
-
On mobile browsers, users can enter text or use their phone’s microphone.
-
ChatGPT Translate also allows you to choose the translation style, such as “academic,” “natural,” “business,” or “child-friendly.”
Previously, ChatGPT translated texts within the main chatbot, but now the translator has been separated into a separate web product.
OpenAI did not make a separate official announcement about the launch of the service and did not specify which language model is used for translation.
On January 15, 2026, OpenAI signed a multi-year contract with semiconductor developer Cerebras Systems to supply computing power.
The deal, worth over $10 billion, aims to radically speed up ChatGPT and expand the artificial intelligence infrastructure by 2028.
