$100M for “medical memory” for ChatGPT Health. OpenAI acquires Latvian medical startup Torch

OpenAI has officially  announced the acquisition of Torch, a startup specializing in aggregating and structuring medical data.

Although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, according to The Information, OpenAI paid approximately $100 million in shares for the startup. The deal took the form of an acqui-hire: the Torch team, consisting of only four specialists, will join OpenAI to work on the company’s new direction.

  • The Torch startup was working on creating a mobile application that combines all of a user’s scattered medical information for further use by artificial intelligence.
  • The system collected data from various sources: results of visits to doctors, laboratory tests, wearable device readings, and wellness portals.
  • The developers themselves called their technology “medical memory for AI,” capable of transforming chaotic records into a structured contextual engine for more accurate health analysis.

The Torch team has extensive experience in the field of medical technology. Co-founder of the startup Ilya Abizov said that the developers met while working on the well-known Forward Health project.

This company, which developed a network of high-tech AI-based medical offices, attracted over $400 million in investments but was forced to close suddenly at the end of 2024. After Forward Health collapsed, four engineers focused on creating Torch.

Focus on AI medicine

This deal is directly related to the development of the recently announced ChatGPT Health service. OpenAI plans to use Torch’s developments to allow chatbot users to manage their medical indicators more effectively and receive personalized analysis based on their complete medical history.
