Google launches a single standard for purchasing goods via AI

Google has officially announced its transition to the “AI commerce” stage, where artificial intelligence performs specific tasks on behalf of the user.

The key announcement was the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a new open standard designed to provide a common language for interaction between AI agents, businesses, and payment systems.

  • The protocol was developed in collaboration with industry leaders including Shopify, Walmart, Target, and eBay. UCP is compatible with existing industry protocols such as Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing agents to work seamlessly across different platforms without the need to create separate integrations for each service.
  • One of the first practical applications of UCP will be the direct payment feature in Google’s AI search mode and in the Gemini app. Users in the US will be able to purchase products from selected retailers while researching products, using payment and delivery information from Google Wallet or PayPal.
  • At the same time, the retailer remains the official seller of record and retains the ability to customize the integration process. In the coming months, Google plans to scale this feature to the global market and add support for loyalty programs.

For direct interaction between brands and customers, Google is launching the Business Agent tool.

This is a virtual shopping assistant that responds to customer inquiries in the brand’s corporate style directly in search results. In the first phase, chains such as Lowe’s, Reebok, and Poshmark have gained access to the tool.
