Anthropic restores access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after U.S. export controls lifted

Anthropic restores access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after U.S. export controls lifted

The U.S. government has lifted export controls on Anthropic’s latest artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

The company announced this.

Anthropic will gradually restore access to the models for users worldwide starting July 1.

How access to the models will be restored

Claude Fable 5

  • Will be available from Wednesday, July 1, to users worldwide on the Claude.ai, Claude Platform, Claude Code and Claude Cowork platforms.
  • Through July 7, users on Pro, Max, Team and some Enterprise plans will be able to use Fable 5 up to 50% of their weekly limits, after which the model will switch to a paid credits system.
  • Access via the AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry clouds will be restored soon, the company says.

Claude Mythos 5

  • Anthropic has already restored access to this model for a select list of organizations in the U.S.
  • Developers are currently coordinating with the government to expand access to other domestic and international partners.

“We appreciate our users’ patience and everyone who worked with us on redeploying the models,” the company said.

What came before

On June 12, 2026, Anthropic disabled its most powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

The reason was a U.S. government export-control directive requiring that access to the products be closed to all foreign nationals, whether they are inside the U.S. or abroad, including foreign employees of Anthropic.

Because the government decision required immediate compliance and developers did not have a reliable tool to verify users’ nationality in real time, the company temporarily turned off Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for everyone.

What is known about Fable 5 and Mythos 5

On June 9, 2026, Anthropic presented and opened access to its AI models Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5.

According to Anthropic, Claude Fable 5 is the company’s most powerful model among those available for general use.

The model has shown strong performance in programming, data work, document analysis and scientific research.

However, Fable 5 will not fulfill certain requests in cybersecurity, biology, chemistry and model distillation.

If the classifier detects a potential threat, the request will automatically be routed to the less powerful model Claude Opus 4.8.

The Mythos model is positioned as one of the most ‘advanced’ in programming and ‘agent’ AI — meaning it can independently carry out complex tasks.

It can find cybersecurity vulnerabilities and potentially create or improve cyberattacks.

The Mythos model is also used by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), despite the Pentagon previously adding the company to a list of risky suppliers.
