4A Games unveiled the first gameplay trailer for METRO 2039 and announced the release date

The developers of METRO 2039, 4A Games, presented the first full gameplay trailer of the game titled «Hunter» during the Xbox Games Showcase presentation.

The new trailer was the first demonstration of gameplay for the upcoming shooter. The video showed for the first time the main antagonist Hunter, new locations, weapons and gameplay elements.

What the trailer showed

The trailer runs for almost three minutes and is made entirely of footage rendered in the game engine.

The central figure of the new video is Hunter — a former Spartan who now leads the Novoreich and serves as the game’s main antagonist.

In the trailer he is shown in a new outfit styled after the armor of the Order “Sparta”.

The trailer also shows new ways to interact with the environment and use the surroundings during playthroughs.

The trailer also includes:

• new locations in post-apocalyptic Moscow and the metro;
• irradiated urban areas and dangerous wild territories;
• settlements on metro stations;
• new mutants;
• the new weapon “Shatun”;
• elements of survival, stealth and world exploration.

When METRO 2039 releases

METRO 2039 will be released on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store in February 2027.

Metro 2039 story

The events of Metro 2039 take place in the Moscow metro after a nuclear apocalypse, where the surviving people try to survive in a devastated world.

The main protagonist of the new installment will be the Stranger. According to the plot, he is haunted by nightmares and must return to the metro — a place he swore never to return to.

Developers explain that this decision will allow players to better understand the character’s thoughts and internal struggle.

METRO 2039 will also introduce a new antagonistic force — the Novoreich, led by a leader known as the Führer-Hunter.

This faction seeks to absorb the metro and subject it to its will, but the main hero stands in their way. 

Among the game’s key elements, the developers will retain claustrophobic spaces, a gloomy atmosphere and detailed worldbuilding.

Developers note that the series’ themes remain unchanged, but in the new installment they are presented more distinctly.
