Universal and DreamWorks studios will release a standalone film about Donkey from Shrek
Universal and DreamWorks have scheduled the premiere of the film “Donkey” for June 30, 2028.
Variety reports this.
The spinoff will be based on Donkey’s origin story and development in the film “Shrek”.
Who is working on the “Donkey” animated film
For the project, the studios assembled the following team:
- director Charlie Bean (known for his work on “The Lego Ninjago Movie” and the live-action adaptation of “Lady and the Tramp”);
- co-director Matt Flinn (worked as a storyboard artist at DreamWorks on projects such as “The Wild Robot”, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “The Bad Guys 2”);
- producer Rebecca Huntley (produced “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “The Bad Guys”).
When the premiere will take place
The release of “Donkey” will take place a year after another major franchise premiere — on June 30, 2028.
In summer 2027 Universal and DreamWorks will release “Shrek 5”.
In this installment Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will once again voice their characters — Shrek, Donkey and Fiona — and Zendaya will join the cast.
Recall that the original film “Shrek” was released in 2000 and became a hit, grossing almost $500 million worldwide and winning the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The franchise was then continued with three sequels (“Shrek 2” in 2004, “Shrek the Third” in 2007 and “Shrek Forever After” in 2010), as well as two “Puss in Boots” spinoffs. Altogether these films have grossed over $3 billion worldwide.
Recall that on June 22 the animated film “Toy Story 5” hit theaters with $160 million in North American box office receipts.
It is the best start of the year in US cinemas and the most successful debut in the history of the “Toy Story” franchise.
