The sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2” collected $233.6 million worldwide in its first weekend. 

Variety reports this.

According to Suspilne Kultura, in Ukraine “The Devil Wears Prada 2” earned UAH 40.3 million in box office receipts during its opening weekend. These figures also include results from advance screenings held prior to the official release.

The sequel’s North American results ($77 million from 4,150 theaters) far surpass the original film’s opening, which started with $27.5 million in 2006.

The new film also posted the fourth-best start of the year in the U.S., behind the films “Michael”, “Super Mario: Galaxy in Theaters” and “Project “Ave Maria”.” 

According to director David Frankel, most of the new budget went to actor salaries. The second installment is expected to overtake the original’s total lifetime gross ($326 million) within a few weeks.

The sequel’s events take place twenty years later. Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) returns to Runway magazine as an editor under the leadership of editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).

The film, again directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, also stars Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Variety reports that audiences received the film positively, giving it an “A-” on the CinemaScore scale?This is an American company that conducts audience surveys in theaters to assess how much viewers liked the film, and forecasts box office based on those ratings.. 

How much was spent to produce “The Devil Wears Prada 2”

Forbes writes that 20th Century may have spent roughly $100 million on producing the sequel, not including marketing costs. 

For comparison: the first film’s budget was approximately $40 million.

Disney’s investment is expected to pay off quickly, and the new release is projected to surpass the original film’s total gross (which opened at $27.5 million in the U.S. and finished with about $451 million worldwide) within just a few weeks.
