The most expensive finale in history. How much does it cost to produce and cast the final season of Stranger Things?

On December 31, Netflix will release the final episode of the cult series Stranger Things, which in nine years has grown from a local hit to one of the most profitable media franchises in the world.

AIN has gathered all the details about production costs, actors’ earnings, and the series’ global impact on the market.

The price of the final season

With a budget of $50-60 million per episode, the fifth season of Stranger Things officially joins the league of the most expensive series in streaming history. The show’s budget has grown rapidly with each new season, reflecting the franchise’s success and the increase in production scale.

The increase in cost is due not only to the complexity of filming, but also to a significant increase in actors’ fees: the show’s leading stars now receive $350,000 per episode.

How much did the actors earn?

Netflix adheres to a clear hierarchical payment structure based on experience, character significance, and the results of lengthy negotiations.

• The highest level was occupied by Winona Ryder and David Harbour, whose fees amounted to $9.5 million per season. Millie Bobby Brown occupies a separate position: her contract is part of a global exclusive agreement with Netflix, which includes the films Enola Holmes and The Electric State, so her exact income for the final season is not disclosed, but is estimated to be the most substantial among the entire cast.

• The second tier includes stars who grew up in front of viewers: Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Sadie Sink. Each of them received over $7 million for the fifth season. For comparison, in the first season, these same actors earned only $25,000 per episode, which indicates a 35-fold increase in their income over a decade.

• The third level of fees covers the “older teenagers”: Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, Charlie Heaton, and Joe Keery. Their payments amounted to just over $6 million each. The rest of the supporting actors received significantly smaller amounts, but even for them, participating in the finale was a significant financial and career asset.

The total amount paid to actors for the final season is estimated at over $80 million, which is about 15-20% of the total production budget.

Stranger Things for retail and brands

The series has demonstrated a phenomenal ability to influence consumer demand through product integration and licensing agreements:

• After the release of the second season, sales of Kellogg’s frozen waffles, which are the main character’s favorite food, increased by 14% in the fourth quarter of 2017.

• Interest in the Dungeons & Dragons board game has grown by 673% since the series launched, and sales of the game jumped 96% in 2017-2018.

• The marketing campaign for Chip’s Ahoy cookies, released ahead of the fifth season, garnered 11 billion ad impressions.

The total number of views for all seasons of the series has officially surpassed 1.2 billion. Although individual seasons of Wednesday and Squid Game have higher ratings, Stranger Things remains the most stable asset: the series became the first in Netflix history to have five seasons simultaneously in the global Top 10.
