SpaceX raised $40B of debt financing to purchase chips for AI

SpaceX raised $40 billion of debt financing to purchase graphics processing units (GPUs) needed for artificial intelligence.

This was reported by the company’s CEO Ilon Mask.

The new equipment is expected to arrive in the first half of 2027.

More about the raised $40 billion

According to Mask, most of the financing was raised in the form of debt with the option for early repayment. The funds are planned to be used to buy GPUs that will be delivered in the first and second quarters of 2027.

Earlier Reuters reported that SpaceX was negotiating with banks and investment firms to raise $40 billion to purchase NVIDIA AI chips. At the same time, the terms of the financing are not yet fully clear. Mask said the deal has already closed but did not specify whether investors had agreed to the final terms.

Mask explained that SpaceX was able to raise that sum thanks to an investment credit rating and revenues from the Starlink satellite internet and rocket launches. These areas bring the company money regardless of its business in the artificial intelligence sector.

Why SpaceX needs AI chips

The new GPUs are needed to expand computing capacity in the field of artificial intelligence. Such chips are required for training AI models, as well as for their subsequent operation — for example, processing user queries.

The company already has the Colossus supercomputer, which it uses to train large language models.

In May 2026 SpaceXSI reported that Colossus 1 has more than 220 000 Nvidia GPUs.

How SpaceX’s AI business is growing

For the third quarter of 2026, SpaceX recorded $14.58 billion in revenue, which is 161% more than the same period last year. In particular, the company’s AI-related revenue increased nearly tenfold — to $7.56 billion. Thus, AI already accounts for more than half of SpaceX’s quarterly revenue.

AI development is handled by the SpaceXSI division, which was previously called SpaceXAI. In early October Ilon Mask announced its renaming. The new name comes from Super Intelligence — superintelligence. The division develops the Grok models and other tools based on them.

In addition to its own AI products, SpaceXSI provides computing power to other companies. In particular, in May it agreed with Anthropic to provide access to Colossus 1 for work on the Claude models. This allows the company to earn revenue not only from its own AI services but also from providing compute infrastructure to other developers.

At the same time, SpaceX, together with Tesla, is working on in-house chip manufacturing as part of the Terafab project in Austin. The first test chip is planned to be fabricated in May or June 2027, and mass production is scheduled to start by the third quarter of 2028.
