SoftBank doubled its profits to $16B thanks to OpenAI’s growth. The company is preparing to invest in AI

Japanese tech giant SoftBank Group reported a sharp increase in profits in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, reaching ¥2.5 trillion ($16.6 billion), more than double last year’s figures.

This was reported by Reuters and the Financial Times.

The main reason for this jump was investment in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, whose market value has grown significantly this year.

In addition to profits from OpenAI, assets in PayPay and the sale of shares in Nvidia and T-Mobile had a positive impact on financial results. The company earned $5.8 billion from the sale of 32 million Nvidia shares alone, and another $9.2 billion from its stake in T-Mobile.

At the same time, Vision Fund, SoftBank’s main investment division, made a profit of ¥2.8 billion, mainly thanks to OpenAI and PayPal.

Against the backdrop of these successes, SoftBank’s shares more than doubled in value to ¥22,000. This, according to FT journalists, makes SoftBank’s CEO the richest person in Japan.

On November 10, 2025, Business Insider reported that OpenAI was exploring the possibility of creating a personal medical assistant or platform for collecting and managing user health data.
