Russia has blocked access to the popular gaming platform Roblox, as stated by the Reuters.
Roblox was blocked due to the discovery of the mass and repeated distribution of materials that promote and justify extremist and terrorist activities, incite illegal acts of a violent nature, and advocate for LGBT issues. (The “international LGBT movement” is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia.)
Roskomnadzor also stated that the platform distributes “inappropriate content that could negatively affect the spiritual and moral development of children.”
The history of Russian censorship
Back in January, Roblox removed content at the request of Roskomnadzor (RKN) that the agency claimed contained propaganda of “non-traditional sexual relationships.” The regulator found these materials on the platform and added links to them to the unified register of prohibited information.
In 2024, the Duolingo app removed references to “non-traditional sexual relationships,” according to Russian terminology, in response to a warning from the supervisory authority regarding the publication of LGBT content.
In August of this year, Russia began restricting some calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, accusing these foreign platforms of refusing to share information with law enforcement agencies in cases of fraud and terrorism.
