ChatGPT will become 15 times faster. OpenAI has signed a $10 billion contract with Cerebras
OpenAI has signed a multi-year contract with semiconductor developer Cerebras Systems to supply computing power.
The deal, worth over $10 billion, aims to radically speed up ChatGPT and expand artificial intelligence infrastructure by 2028.
The goal is to create the fastest AI in the world.
Under the agreement, Cerebras will provide computing resources with a total capacity of 750 MW. The infrastructure will be built in several stages, and its main goal is to reduce the response time of neural networks.
“This collaboration will make ChatGPT not only the most powerful but also the fastest AI platform in the world,” said OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman.
According to the developers, recent tests of the GPT-OSS-120B model on Cerebras hardware showed that it runs 15 times faster than traditional solutions.
Cerebras Systems is known for its unique approach: instead of standard small chips, the company creates giant processors the size of an entire silicon wafer. This allows Cerebras to challenge market leader Nvidia by offering higher performance in specific AI tasks. At the same time, OpenAI is creating its own chip in collaboration with Broadcom.
Financial prospects
For the startup Cerebras, the deal with OpenAI became a ticket to the “big leagues” of the tech business.
The company is currently negotiating to raise about $1 billion in investments ahead of its planned IPO. The startup is preliminarily valued at $22 billion.
The deal with the creators of ChatGPT confirms the strategy of tech giants: despite the huge costs, they are willing to invest billions in any solutions that can meet the growing demand for computing power for AI.
