Macro litter in the Mediterranean basin

Marine litter, a major source of pollution in the Mediterranean. A recent study conducted by one of the partner of MEDSEALITTER, ISPRA, compared the amount, composition and distribution of floating macro-litter in different high sea areas of the Mediterranean basin. More than 80% of observed items are composed by plastic in all areas and seasons, with highest proportion in the Adriatic Sea, Ligurian Sea, and Sicilian-Sardinian Channels. The widespread use of one use cheap plastic products and the durability of material makes them the majority of waste. Stop the single-use of object as soon as possible seem the only solution for limiting the impact of plastic on marine ecosystems
