MacPaw and Liquid AI will develop local AI for Mac. Companies have signed a cooperation agreement

Ukrainian MacPaw and American Liquid AI announced a strategic partnership.

This was reported to AIN by the companies.

The companies will work on on-device artificial intelligence technology for Mac, and the first integration will be the AI assistant Eney.

More about the MacPaw and Liquid AI collaboration

Under the partnership, the companies will build a technology stack to run AI directly on Mac computers. To do this, they plan to combine Liquid Foundation Models (LFM), developed for AI assistants on macOS, with MacPaw’s Elix and Mnemos technologies.

According to the company, Eney already exists and currently runs on cloud models. The new partnership aims to move the execution of most of its tasks directly onto the user’s device.

MacPaw said that the first results of the joint development are expected this year. They did not yet name specific dates for beta testing or a public release.

The technology is targeted at Mac computers with Apple Silicon chips — M1 and newer.

More about the capabilities of the solution the companies plan to build

MacPaw says that Eney will be able to work with files, apps and the user’s context locally.

«The partnership’s first goal is for Eney to be able to do locally what it currently does via the cloud,» — the company said.

For example, when composing an email the assistant will determine which mail service the device owner uses and perform the action in the corresponding app.

Access to system tools will be carried out only within the permissions of macOS, and for potentially dangerous operations the assistant will request user confirmation.

MacPaw also clarified that the new development will not become a separate app. It is a platform technology that will first be integrated into Eney and later into other company products where appropriate.

In a comment to AIN, MacPaw said teams have already been working on the technology for about a month. They plan to prepare a working prototype by November this year. After testing in Eney, the solution will be gradually deployed to other products in the ecosystem.

In the future, MacPaw also plans to make the created AI stack available to other ecosystem products and developers via Setapp.
