Following the signing of a joint declaration, the 21 May is now officially recognised as European Natura 2000 Day and will be celebrated annually. The establishment of an annual day to celebrate Natura 2000 network – the largest network of protected sites in the world – and raise awareness of the importance of its conservation is the initiative of the Spanish LIFE project Activa Red Natura 2000 (LIFE11 INF/ES/000665).
