Launch of the WestMED Initiative

The Ministers of Western Mediterranean countries gathered in Naples, Italy, to endorse and launch the Initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Western Mediterranean – a goal-oriented series of joint actions to make the common sea space safer, cleaner and more productive.

This series of joint actions is known as the WestMED Initiative, and is now supported by 10 countries (Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia).

The governance of the WestMED Initiative formally recognised to the Interreg MED Programme the role of observer, together with other key actors of the Mediterranean basin, such as the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, the United Nation Environmental Programme-Mediterranean Action Plan, the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions, the Committee of the Regions, the European Social and Economic Committee , the BLUEMED initiative etc.

Moreover, the foreseen Assistance Mechanism of the WestMED Initiative will build on existing coordination platforms, including a close cooperation with the MED Programme Axis 4, the governance platform PANORAMED.
