Hypersonica secures €100 million to boost sovereign hypersonic deep-strike systems for Europe and its allies
Hypersonica, the British-German defence company developing sovereign hypersonic deep-strike systems for Europe and its allies, has secured €100 million in Series B funding.
The Series B funding round was co-led by Lightspeed and General Catalyst, with continued participation from existing investors including Plural and 201 Ventures.
“Hypersonica is redefining how advanced defence capability gets built. The team pairs deep technical expertise with exceptional speed of execution, and the strength of our support reflects our confidence in both the technology and their ability to deliver,” said Alexander Schmitt, Partner at Lightspeed.
Founded in 2023 with engineering teams spread across its Munich HQ and its wholly-owned subsidiary in London, Hypersonic is building what it describes as a first-of-kind, sovereign and cost-effective hypersonic strike capability, one that operates without ITAR restrictions and is developed entirely within Europe.
Led by co-founders Dr. Philipp Kerth and Dr. Marc Ewenz, the startup set out to address the fundamental challenges of hypersonic flight, where extreme aerodynamic heating renders conventional aerospace technology obsolete at speeds beyond Mach 5. The startup overcomes this challenge with state-of-the-art materials, control architectures and avionics capable of delivering stable and manoeuvrable flight.
Since its €23.3 million Series A in February 2026, Hypersonica has successfully tested its prototype HS-1, achieving speeds above Mach 6 over a range exceeding 300 kilometres, becoming the first privately funded European defence company to reach that milestone. The company says its prototype achieved speeds above Mach 6 at industry-beating cost-effectiveness, claiming its development model reduces costs by more than 80% compared to conventional approaches.
The Series B funding comes as governments across the continent move from debating the need for long-range strike capability to actively funding programmes to shore up their security. The UK’s Defence Investment Plan has announced an initial €921.5 million (£770 million) over four years for the UK-German Deep Precision Strike (DPS) programme under the Trinity House Agreement, while a NATO-led multinational initiative has announced €44.28 million (£37 billion) of investment in DPS capabilities over the coming decade.
“The debate about whether Europe needs hypersonic deep-strike capability is over. Governments have recognised the requirement and begun funding programmes. The challenge now is delivery. Europe needs credible hypersonic long-range capability, and more value for every pound and euro it spends,” said Dr Kerth and Dr Ewenz, co-founders of Hypersonica.
The fresh capital will be used to accelerate the development of its deep-strike systems, increase testing cadence, expand operations and reindustrialisation across Europe. The financing will also create hundreds of highly skilled engineering and manufacturing jobs across the UK and Germany.
Hypersonica aims to have its hypersonic deep-strike systems fully developed by 2029, while simultaneously building a broader European technology and manufacturing base with a goal of production at scale.
