GTA VI will be available to download before launch: it will require up to 212 GB of storage

Rockstar Games will allow players to download Grand Theft Auto VI nine days before the official release. Pre-loading will begin on November 10 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the game itself will launch on November 19, 2026.

This was announced by Rockstar Games.

Players who placed a digital pre-order will be able to install GTA VI on their consoles in advance, but it can only be launched on the release day.

What is known about GTA VI pre-loading

Pre-loading will start on November 10 simultaneously worldwide. Installing the game will require up to 212 GB of free space depending on the console. Rockstar recommends checking your device’s available storage in advance.

From November 12, boxed editions of GTA VI with a code for digital download instead of a disc are also expected to appear in stores.

What is known about GTA VI

According to Rockstar, the world of GTA VI will be more realistic than in previous entries. For example, if a character steps out onto the street with a rifle, the surrounding world will react to that.

The game will also expand systems that affect characters’ appearances. Food will change Jason and Lucia’s weight, physical exercise will affect their physique. Prolonged running from the police or multi-day partying will also leave visible marks on their appearance.

Players will be able to spend time not only on story missions. Between them, you can explore the world, take part in various activities, and interact with its inhabitants.

For the first time in the main series, GTA VI will feature a male and a female protagonist — Dzheyson Dyuval and Lyusiya Kaminos.

Their stories are connected, but players will be able to control them separately. For example, while driving, you can be behind the wheel as Dzheyson or switch to Lyusiya sitting next to him using her phone.

Rockstar describes the story as a Bonnie and Clyde–style tale. Dzheyson is a former serviceman and drug courier, while Lyusiya has just been released from prison. Together they end up in the criminal world of Leonida.

The game will also include social networks through which players can follow events and characters in the world.

There will be more diverse characters in the game

Rockstar has significantly expanded the diversity of NPCs — secondary characters who populate the world. They will differ not only in appearance but also in behavior, movements, and interaction with the surrounding environment.

To create the characters, the company developed new tools and production processes. More than 50 real street artists were also involved in creating murals for different districts of Vice City.

The developers pay attention to local culture as well. The game will represent various Miami music scenes — from Miami bass to modern hip-hop.

Separately, Rockstar is creating a whole system of brands, shops, clothing, and other everyday elements that should be an organic part of the world.

The GTA VI team has more than doubled in size compared to the Red Dead Redemption 2 development period. Rockstar has offices in different countries, and a separate division in Los Angeles primarily works on NPCs.

Recall, cybercriminals are using the hype around Grand Theft Auto VI to spread malware. Hackers create fake sites that mimic Rockstar Games’ official website and offer to download an alleged demo version of the game.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a series of action-adventure games developed by the American studio Rockstar.

The previous installment, GTA 5, was released in 2013 and sold 195 million copies. Overall, sales of the entire series surpassed 420 million units as of 2024. The game earned recognition for its open world and dynamic gameplay.

The developers noted that such a tool helps train motor skills and practice flight techniques, although it does not replace full training.

At the same time, Ukraine also has court practice related to this franchise. In 2021 a court in Zhytomyr issued a criminal verdict against a local resident who made money from illegal game downloads. The man “reflashed” PlayStation 3 consoles and installed pirated copies of well-known titles on them, including GTA 5.

The court found this to be unauthorized interference with computer systems and fined the offender. In total, including procedural costs, he had to pay more than 21 thousand hryvnias.

The official announcement of the new GTA 6 took place in November 2023, and the first trailer was shown in December. However, the game’s production was accompanied for a long time by data security issues. One incident occurred in September 2022 when a hacker under the nickname teapotuberhacker breached the studio’s systems and leaked source code, an early test build, and dozens of raw gameplay recordings online.

Recall that in September 2026 Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said that GTA VI’s launch will be such a massive event that other game companies should avoid releasing their titles during that period. According to him, the GTA 6 release is vying to be the biggest debut in the history of the video game industry.
