Christopher Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ collected $264M in its opening weekend

Director Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Odyssey’ earned $264.1M at the global box office in its opening weekend.

This was reported by Variety.

Of that, $124.5M came from the domestic US market, while the film collected another $139.6M across 73 other countries.

The Odyssey’s box office represented Christopher Nolan’s most successful opening since the release of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012 ($160M).

Worldwide, the Odyssey’s launch surpassed the initial grosses of ‘The Dark Knight’ ($198M), ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ ($249M) and ‘Oppenheimer’ ($180M).

Additionally, the film posted the third-best opening of the year after ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Super Mario Galaxy’.

Studio Universal spent $250M producing ‘Odyssey’ and another $125M on marketing to a global audience. ‘Odyssey’ became the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX cameras.

What is known about the film ‘Odyssey’

The film is an adaptation of Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic poem about the adventures of Odysseus, king of Ithaca.

The film depicts Odysseus’s wanderings after the Trojan War, his return home, and revenge against the suitors courting his wife Penelope.

Matt Damon plays the lead role — Odysseus.

The cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.

Recall that the film ‘Michael’, dedicated to the life of Michael Jackson, grossed over $1B at the global box office. It’s the first biopic to reach that result.
