Nintendo, at the request of the European Union, will release a new version of the Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery.
This way the company will comply with the EU’s new regulation, which will require manufacturers to ensure the easy replacement of batteries in a range of electronic devices.
New EU rules
Nintendo said it is implementing measures to comply with the new EU regulation and is preparing corresponding product versions.
According to European legislation, starting from February 2027 many types of gadgets, including portable game consoles, must have designs that allow users to remove and replace batteries.
So far Nintendo has not specified what exact changes will be made to the new Switch 2 version.
What will happen to previous console versions
For current products whose model numbers begin with the prefix “BEE”, the company will create new identifiers.
Future versions that comply with the law will receive unique model numbers, and their packaging will include an additional “OSM” code. This will allow them to be designated as separate products for regulatory purposes.
Recall that the Switch became the best-selling console in the history of the Japanese giant Nintendo, surpassing the previous record holder — the Nintendo DS nearly nine years after its launch.
Total lifetime sales of the Switch reached 155.37 million units. This allowed it to surpass the Nintendo DS (154.02 million), which had previously held the top spot. Game Boy remains in third place (118.69 million units sold).
