Apple Is Preparing an Update to the Apple Watch. Ideas Include Screenless Models
Apple is working on a major update to the Apple Watch lineup and is exploring new device formats, including models without a screen.
Bloomberg reports.
The company is investigating possible changes against the backdrop of growing popularity of smart rings and fitness bands.
More on rethinking the Apple Watch
Bloomberg writes that for more than a decade the Apple Watch has remained the market leader in smartwatches (sales grew 21% in the first quarter). However, product development has faced competition from companies such as Oura, Whoop and Google.
As a result, Apple’s design team is exploring new directions for smartwatches:
- the possibility of creating devices without displays, as well as experiments with different sizes and round screens;
- releasing more affordable models than the current SE line and developing new premium versions;
- deeper integration of Siri’s AI features.
The next models, Series 12 and Ultra 4, will receive classic performance improvements, updated colors, bands and the possible return of a ceramic case.
A revamp of the entire lineup will take more time.
What is known about the September Apple event
The presentation is scheduled for the first week of September (most likely — September 9). It will be the first for John Ternus in the role of the new CEO of the company after Tim Cook.
According to the outlet, the main novelty will be the first foldable (flexible) iPhone, whose release marks the biggest shape change in Apple’s smartphone history.
The event is also expected to include announcements of:
- the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max smartphones;
- the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4;
- an updated Apple TV set-top box, the HomePod mini speaker and the company’s first smart home hub.
In addition, Apple is preparing a MacBook Pro with the M6 chip, new iMacs, an updated iPad mini and a premium MacBook with a touch OLED display, which are expected this fall and early next year.
