Amazon unveils a new AI chip, but it still lags behind competitors like Google and NVIDIA. Why?
Amazon has expedited the release of its new Trainium 3 AI chip. The company aims to strengthen its position in competition with Nvidia and Google in the artificial intelligence market. Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock price increased by 1.6%. Bloomberg reported the news.
- The Trainium3 is a cheaper, more energy-efficient chip for training AI models. Amazon hopes to attract companies looking for good deals with this chip.
- Currently, the main user of Trainium is the startup Anthropic, for which AWS has combined over 500,000 chips in data centers across several US states.
- By the end of the year, AWS plans to allocate up to one million chips to Anthropic.
AWS acknowledges that its chips lack extensive software libraries. For instance, the startup Bedrock Robotics uses Nvidia graphics processors to train its models due to their convenience and performance.
According to Bloomberg, Amazon remains the largest seller of leased computing power. However, the company lags behind Microsoft and Google in collaborating with leading AI tool developers.
“As we get into early next year we’ll start to scale out very, very quickly,” says Dave Brown, AWS Vise President.
