The US renews the supply of spare parts to Belavia, Belarus’s airline. However, flights to Russia are still banned
The United States has permitted the sale of aircraft parts to Belavia, a Belarusian airline, but is simultaneously attempting to prohibit its flights to Russia to prevent the parts from ending up in the hands of Russian airlines. Politico first reported the news.
- The U.S. decision was made possible after Minsk released 52 political prisoners and eased sanctions against Belavia.
- Although the US Department of Commerce document clearly prohibits flights to Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, experts doubt the effectiveness of control due to open borders and cooperation between Belarus and Russia.
- This could create tension with the European Union, which has its own restrictions on providing services and economic resources to Belavia.
Ultimately, American manufacturers such as Boeing will decide whether to sell spare parts, while Airbus claims to comply with international laws and sanctions in every transaction.
