Spotify acquires WhoSampled along with its team and music database
Spotify is buying WhoSampled, a database that tracks samples and other derivatives of musical works, Tech Crunch reports.
The purchase includes both the entire database and the WhoSampled team. According to Tech Crunch, the company has about ten employees.
WhoSampled tracks over 1.2 million songs and nearly 622,000 samples. This data is used in new Spotify features, including the upcoming SongDNA tool.
Spotify has collaborated with WhoSampled before. In 2016, the services were integrated so that users could connect their playlists and saved tracks to the WhoSampled app.
After the deal, WhoSampled and Spotify will continue to operate separately.
The companies will work on improving user processes. They plan to speed up content moderation, disable ads on the website, and switch to a free version of the mobile app.
The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
