GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke is leaving the company to launch a new startup
GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced that he will leave the Microsoft-owned platform by the end of the year to launch a new startup. His tenure was marked by significant developments in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly thanks to Copilot products.
He announced his decision in a blog post, noting that his “startup roots” had inspired him to become a founder again. Dohmke did not disclose any details about the upcoming project.
Of German origin, he moved to the US over ten years ago after selling his startup to Microsoft. Prior to his appointment as CEO, Dohmke led Microsoft’s mobile tools for developers and worked on the $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub in 2018.
According to GitHub, more than 150 million developers currently use its tools to create, maintain, and collaborate on software. Under Dohmke’s leadership, the company has expanded its international presence, obtained FedRAMP certification for use in US federal agencies, and doubled the number of AI projects on the platform.
According to Axios, after Dohmke leaves the company, GitHub’s management will report to several top Microsoft executives:
-
Revenue, engineering, and support for GitHub will be overseen by Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft’s developer division.
-
GitHub product director Mario Rodriguez will report to Asha Sharma, head of Microsoft’s AI platform division.
Microsoft has not yet announced who will become the new CEO of GitHub.
