Elon Musk’s SpaceX to receive $2 billion from the Pentagon for satellite development

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX will receive $2 billion from the Pentagon to develop satellites that will track missiles and aircraft as part of the Golden Dome project, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing its own sources.

The funding is provided for in the tax and budget law signed by President Trump in July. However, no specific contractor was named at the time.

According to the plan, the air moving target indicator system could include up to 600 satellites that will create an orbital surveillance network.

SpaceX will also be considered a key participant in two other Pentagon satellite programs.

The first is Milnet, designed to transmit confidential military communications.

The second is a system that will allow tracking of ground vehicles.

The development of these satellite projects strengthens SpaceX’s position in the field of US national security.

According to government officials, Golden Dome is a multi-layered system of satellites and technologies capable of destroying missiles before they reach their targets.

The Pentagon is not currently disclosing details of how the system will work and has not yet signed any major contracts while preparing a financial plan.

“We do not provide details regarding the specifics of the system or issues that have not yet been decided,” said a Pentagon spokesman, declining to comment on SpaceX’s involvement.

Musk’s company also did not comment on the information.

Trump said the Golden Dome would cost $175 billion, although analysts estimate it will cost hundreds of billions more, according to WSJ journalists.
