American AI startup Perplexity has officially offered Google $34.5 billion to acquire the Chrome web browser.

According to media reports, the initiative came amid an antitrust investigation in the US, where authorities are insisting on the sale of Chrome and the licensing of search data to competitors.
Journalists write that this should become one of the means of limiting Google’s monopoly on the Internet search market. Federal Judge Amit Mehta will announce a decision on specific measures in the coming days.
Google has already said it will fight any demand to sell Chrome and is suggesting less drastic changes — like tweaking its deals with Apple, Mozilla, and Android to open up the search market to competition.
Analysts commenting to Bloomberg doubt the seriousness of Perplexity’s proposal. Colin Sebastian of Robert W. Baird & Co. believes that $34.5 billion “significantly undervalues” the real value of Chrome, which he estimates at around $100 billion.
In his opinion, the forced sale of the browser is unlikely due to the potential harm to users and the complexity of separating Chrome from the Google ecosystem.
