Apple has announced that John Giannandrea, head of artificial intelligence, will step down from his position and leave the company in spring 2026, Bloomberg reports.
- Under Giannandrea’s leadership, Apple’s AI team failed to catch up with its competitors in Silicon Valley.
- The company entered the generative AI market late — two years after ChatGPT appeared.
- The Apple Intelligence platform received negative reviews. In addition, Apple had to postpone the launch of the updated version of the Siri voice assistant.
Giannandrea joined Apple seven years ago after working at Google and reported directly to CEO Tim Cook.
Initially, Giannandrea was responsible for Siri and other areas related to artificial intelligence, including robotics.
However, after the delay of the Siri update, which was planned for spring 2025, some of his responsibilities were transferred to Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, and his team.
Apple will not be looking for a successor to Giannandrea at this time. The team will be divided between Craig Federighi, head of software engineering, Sabih Khan, chief operating officer, and Eddy Cue, head of services.
This decision was made to optimize the process of offering products to institutional customers, including large businesses, schools, and government agencies.
