A big round of funding: Anthropic close to $10B deal to overtake OpenAI and xAI
Anthropic, an American startup specializing in the development of artificial intelligence, is negotiating to raise up to $10 billion in a new round of financing. Bloomberg reports this with reference to informed sources.
Initially, it was discussed to raise up to $5 billion at a company valuation of $170 billion. However, investor interest has been so strong that the round may double. The final amount has not yet been determined.
Investment details
The round is expected to be led by Iconiq Capital. Other potential participants include TPG Inc., Lightspeed Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Menlo Ventures. The company is also in talks with sovereign wealth funds of Qatar (Qatar Investment Authority) and Singapore (GIC).
Competing with OpenAI and xAI
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has positioned itself as a trusted developer with a focus on security. The new investment should increase its competition with Elon Musk’s OpenAI and xAI, which have already raised billions of dollars this year to fund the development of AI models, invest in data centers, and attract qualified personnel.
The new funding will significantly increase the company’s valuation and cement its status as one of the leading AI developers in the world. At the beginning of 2025, Anthropic raised $3.5 billion led by Lightspeed, and the company was valued at $61.5 billion.
